Challenge of the month:
December

An Opportunity for Object Detection

Public Projects help the community learn from each other, and teach developers and engineers how to solve real-world problems with Edge Impulse. This month we are asking you to show off your best object detection projects.

For our last Project of the Month Challenge, grab an Edge Impulse device that has a camera, and train a model to recognize two (or more) distinct items. These can be any items of your choosing, but make sure you build a model accurate enough to tell them apart!

$500

Best project of the month

All winning entries are also entered into our annual competition for a chance to win more prizes.

$100

1st runner-up

$100

2nd runner-up

Getting started is easy

1

Clone one of the following starter projects

2

Add your own data, train, and deploy your model

3

Make your project public, and fill out the submission form

Starter projects

Bottles versus Cans

How do you prefer your beverages? This project can identify and differentiate bottles and cans.

AI Cart

A shopping cart that uses computer vision to determine what items are in the basket.

Hardware Sorter

Distinguish between screws, washers, nuts, and bolts with this object detection project.

Judging criteria

Quality

You must have uploaded and trained on enough data to make an accurate and functional model. We suggest you include a Readme that describes in detail what the project is suitable for, the types of Blocks used, and the methodology used to collect your data set.

Innovation

We encourage the project to be a novel application or use-case, an incredible data set, or an innovative way to solve a problem. We suggest you present a unique and valuable use of AI / ML to solve a real-world problem.

Originality

Your work must be unique, and not plagiarized someone else's work. Using a Public Project as the basis for your work is fine, but enough evidence of individuality or improvement must be shown to separate your project from the original creator.

Best projects
of the year

All winning entries are automatically entered into the annual competition. The three best projects will each receive an amazing prize pack.

An amazing prize pack (3 winners)

MacBook Pro, AirPod Pro, and
an Edge Impulse backpack.

Previous winners

🥇

AR Pong Game with Object Detection

An ML model using Edge Impulse's FOMO (Faster Objects, More Objects) to detect and differentiate which players are playing & their coordinates.

🥈

Visual Inspection With Object Detection AI

A machine learning model to quickly and accurately identify problems that may be missed by human inspection.

🥉

Animal Monitoring using TinyML

This project uses a TinyML model and Arduino TinyML kit to monitor animals in the surroundings.
