Challenge of the month:
September

Build your motion detection project in minutes

Public Projects help the community learn from each other, and teach developers and engineers how to solve real-world problems with Edge Impulse. This month we are asking you to explore what is possible with motion detection.

Use the Edge Impulse Studio to train a device to recognize a particular movement. By taking advantage of the onboard IMU, you can teach your mobile phone, Arduino or other supported boards to recognize a motion or a movement pattern.

$500

Best project of the month

All winning entries are also entered into our annual competition for a chance to win more prizes.

$100

1st runner-up

$100

2nd runner-up

Getting started is easy

1

Clone one of the following starter projects

2

Add your own data, train, and deploy your model

3

Make your project public, and fill out the submission form

Starter projects

Continuous motion recognition

Detect various hand gestures with your device's accelerometer.

Package Monitoring

Monitor the safe handling of packages during transit.

Fall Detection

Detect people falling with machine learning.

Judging criteria

Quality

You must have uploaded and trained on enough data to make an accurate and functional model. We suggest you include a Readme that describes in detail what the project is suitable for, the types of Blocks used, and the methodology used to collect your data set.

Innovation

We encourage the project to be a novel application or use-case, an incredible data set, or an innovative way to solve a problem. We suggest you present a unique and valuable use of AI / ML to solve a real-world problem.

Originality

Your work must be unique, and not plagiarized someone else's work. Using a Public Project as the basis for your work is fine, but enough evidence of individuality or improvement must be shown to separate your project from the original creator.

Best projects
of the year

All winning entries are automatically entered into the annual competition. The three best projects will each receive an amazing prize pack.

An amazing prize pack (3 winners)

MacBook Pro, AirPod Pro, and
an Edge Impulse backpack.

Previous winners

🥇

Potato Beetle Detector

Detect pests on crop with the help of FOMO to perform object detection in real-time on an ESP32 CAM.

🥈

Pest Detector

This project showcases a solution to detect pests on crops. The project is part of a larger initiative aimed at detecting and delivering pesticides with drones when harmful pests are found on crops.

🥉

Optical Mark Recognition (OMR)

Are you fed up with slow and expensive OMR readers? We've got your back. FOMR is a fast, reliable, and cheap OMR reader that can read your OMR sheet faster than the blink of your eye.

🥇

Roadside Litter Detection

Machine learning to the rescue of trash in cities. With the aid of object detection running on a Raspberry Pi mounted on a car window, Nathaniel was able to build a live heat map of trash in San Diego, and help to locate roadside trash.

🥈

AI Cart

A smart shopping cart that eliminates the need to stand in checkout lines, users can check out at their own carts with the help of object detection algorithms running in real-time on an edge device.

🥉

Livestock Detection with Drones

Track and count animals or crops in a quick and efficient way using FOMO while a drone is scanning an agricultural area.

🥇

Hand Exercises Classification using a Wio Terminal

🥈

Voice Controlled AI Mood Lamp

🥉

Bionic Hand Voice Commands Module w/ Edge Impulse & Arduino
